Dishwashers are such a convenient appliance to own. It takes the labor out of doing the dishes by hand, which helps save time for those who are constantly on the go. However, as with every appliance, things can go awry. This can lead to your dishwasher being recalled.

According to the CPSC, there have been several recalled Kenmore dishwashers that have model numbers starting with 665 and FA and FB. Consumers are asked to stop using the affected models immediately and call Kenmore or Sears Roebuck for further assistance. These dishwashers are prone to catch fire due to a wiring problem.

In this article, we will take a deeper look into the Kenmore dishwasher brand, as well as any recalls. As a bonus, we take a bit about the recall terms to help you better understand the steps you should take in a situation like this.

Is There a Recall on Kenmore Dishwashers?

There have been several recalled Kenmore dishwashers with model numbers starting with 665, such as 665.1665591. Along with these model numbers, there are some other Kenmore dishwasher recalls that have serial numbers varying from FA2400000 to FA5299999 or FB0100000 to FB1899999.

These model and serial numbers could be discovered on a plate within the dishwasher door, on the right front rim of the tub.

Consumers who purchased affected Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwashers from Sears, Roebuck, and Co. would be contacted directly by Sears representatives.

Consumers will also be charged nothing for a service call/repair. Customers who need more information before the notice must have their model and serial numbers handy and call (800) 927-1625.

Common Issues with These Kenmore Dishwashers

Just because a dishwasher hasn’t been recalled doesn’t mean it’s in perfect working order! Kenmore has had more than its fair share of issues with their models.

The most common problems include:

  • The dishwasher won’t turn on and run
  • The drain isn’t working
  • The dishwasher won’t fill at all or won’t fill as much as it should
  • The dishwasher won’t stop filling

If the dishwasher isn’t turning on or it’s not running, this could be due to an internal electrical issue. Not only is the problem annoying, but it can be dangerous if it’s a wiring issue.

In this case, the dishwasher should be recalled. It would be best if you got a hold of the retailer where you purchased the dishwasher and let them know immediately. You should also contact Kenmore as soon as possible.

What If I Don’t Have The Warranty or Extended Protection Plan?

You don’t have to sit idle just because you don’t have a warranty (or it has expired) or you didn’t purchase a protection plan. Many people who buy Kenmore dishwashers are told that they have no warranty options.

However, every single appliance you purchase has a warranty option. This is true whether it’s a 90-day warranty that comes with it for free or if you have to purchase additional protection.

If you don’t have the warranty or the extended protection plan, you can still contact Kenmore. Also, look up any class action lawsuits as well as recalls. You never know; if your model was recalled or there are any lawsuits, you’ll be able to have your appliance replaced for free.

Do Recalls Expire?

Recalls do not typically expire. However, the expiration of a recall highly depends on the problem. If the posed threat is dangerous, these are the recalls that do not have an expiration. However, some of the recalls are time-sensitive and, therefore, will have an expiration date.

Always make sure you look at the recall in its entirety so that you will know whether you need to file a claim by a specific due date. If you’re unsure, always ask!

Are Recalls Covered by Warranty?

Recalls and warranties are not quite the same things. Warranties only cover costs of unforeseen malfunctions that occur during the warranty. You are responsible for these costs once the factory warranty expires.

When the factory guarantee on your dishwasher ends, you could indeed purchase a protection plan to keep your costs covered. This is typically a monthly fee you would pay to cover costs of replacement or repair.

What is the Difference Between a Warranty and a Recall?

Product warranties work well with innovative technology because they allow you to purchase a longer warranty at a lower cost.

This gives the consumer an option to cover their appliance for more issues than originally deemed on the primary warranty.

On the other hand, product recall covers products that pose an obvious risk to your buyers’ physical existence or cause damage. This includes dishwashers that catch on fire due to faulty wiring, etc.

How Long Do You Have to Return a Recalled Item?

You have a right to a full refund under the Consumer Rights Act and a right to a refund or exchange underneath the Sale of Goods and Services Act.

The General Product Safety Regulations require manufacturers to make arrangements for product collection and return.

So, if your dishwasher was recalled, you don’t need to worry about figuring out how you’re going to haul it. All you need to do is call Kenmore, and they will need to come to pick the dishwasher up and either deliver a new one or deliver the same one once it’s fixed.

They will also rearrange a professional to re-install the dishwasher as this would void the warranty if it weren’t installed by someone qualified to do so.

That being said, there’s typically no time limit on when you can return a recalled item. However, you want to always check the recall to see if there is a deadline.

Do You Need a Receipt to Return a Recalled Item?

Each recall is unique, but you should not need the original receipt to receive your refund, repair, or replacement. The manufacturer may request proof of ownership, such as a photograph of the product.

This is why it’s always a good idea to keep any receipts you get with larger purchases. That way, you can prove ownership if it ever came to a time that you needed to return it for the purpose of a recall.

Also, sometimes warranties require you to show proof of purchase. So, maybe it’s a good time to run to the store and get an organizer binder to keep your receipts and owners’ manuals in a safe place.

Do You Get Your Money Back When Something is Recalled?

Whether you get your money back with a recall depends on the terms of the recall. If your dishwasher simply needs the door replaced or fixed, then the recall would be a repair.

Sometimes you will have the option of a repair, replacement, or refund. Other times, the company will deem the appliance or item non-salvageable, which is when you would most likely get a refund.

Can You Keep a Recalled Product?

Most of the time, you should cease using it. A recall usually happens because the product is no longer safe to use. Or, sometimes it’s because it can damage your home or belongings by using it.

If you are aware that the product you have has been recalled, then it’s best to follow the steps of the recall. This way, you don’t risk your home or, in extreme circumstances, your life.
