Online ordering is the best! Until FedEx delivers your package to the wrong address. Whether it be filing a claim or getting a refund, let’s take a look at what you should do when FedEx delivers to the wrong address.

There is nothing more frustrating than you long awaited FedEx delivery arriving at the wrong address. Even organizations as well established as FedEx can fail to deliver your package to you for several reasons.

Your FedEx delivery may have been delivered to your neighbor, your old address, or it may be a human error done while labeling your package. Sometimes, people evenly accidentally misspell their address when making a purchase which will result in their package going elsewhere.

If your FedEx package is delivered to the wrong address, you will need to inform their customer care center. Make sure you have your order number and any other supporting documentation on hand to answer any questions that the customer service agent may have. Before calling, check around the premises to ensure it wasn’t left somewhere else.

Why Didn’t My Package Arrive From FedEx?

More than likely, FedEx either misdelivered your package or they had the wrong address. Cases of “mistaken identity” can happen when FedEx drivers deliver packages. This is especially true in neighborhoods with similar looking houses.

In some cases, FedEx simply has the wrong address. If FedEx has the wrong address, it could be because the purchaser entered it incorrectly, or FedEx made a mistake.

For example, let’s say that you recently changed addresses. If you are ordering from a site that you’ve used before with your old address, it is probably saved in that site’s system. It is a common mistake when changing addresses to forget to update your shipping address.

What kind of an address marker does your house or apartment have? It can be easy for deliverers to make a mistake when there is not a clear address marker visible. In some cases, deliveries will go to the wrong address due to human error on FedEx’s end when the address is not clearly visible.

Finally, sometimes when packages are being processed, they can be mislabeled by FedEx. Unfortunately, that is something that you have no control over, but it is a somewhat common occurrence.

What Can I Do If My Package Didn’t Arrive?

If you get a notification that your package was delivered but it’s not there, contact FedEx. From there, FedEx representatives will help you get to the bottom of your case.

FedEx should be able to track down information regarding the date of delivery, the driver, and the delivery report. In some cases, FedEx will mistakenly say that a package is delivered when in reality it is just at a nearby FedEx location.

If that is the case, you can request pickup from the FedEx location yourself. However, if FedEx cannot find your package, you can request a refund.

To get a refund, you will need to provide FedEx with proof of purchase. Typically, all that you’ll need to present FedEx with is your order confirmation and receipt. It is up to FedEx whether or not you will receive a refund.

FedEx Delivered To Wrong Address – What To Do

How Do You File A Claim With FedEx?

Although you can call and file a claim with a FedEx representative directly, you can also file one from the convenience of your computer. You can file claims on all FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, and FedEx Freight shipments.

This also includes shipments made within the United Sates, from the United States to other countries, and shipments from Canada to the United States.

Filing a claim with FedEx is an easy five-step process:

  • To start your claim, fill out and complete the online claim form.
  • Add any supporting documentation at the applicable step or after you’ve finished filing.
  • Once complete, submit the online claim form.
  • Conduct your own inspection, or schedule one.
  • Track the status of your claim online.

Will FedEx Cover My Lost Package?

So long as you have insurance with your missing package, FedEx will cover up to the specific amount that your package is valued at. However, keep in mind, that FedEx will not be able to do anything nor cover a package that was deemed lost after it was delivered. This means that, if a package was delivered successfully and then became lost for whatever reason, they will not cover you.

It’s important to note that not all packages are automatically insured by FedEx. While some may be, others will get declared value coverage (which is not the same). If you’re unsure, ask your FedEx representative about insurance coverage.

Does FedEx Ever Say Delivered When It’s Not?

Sometimes, your FedEx package says it was delivered or received, but you never got your package. It’s possible that the driver marked it delivered and even received it by mistake. They might have sent it to a similar address and marked it as delivered.

The first thing you should do is call FedEx right away. Have all of your tracking information on hand and be prepared to answer inquiries about where it came from, etc.

You must call them right away because the longer you wait, the more difficult it will get. You’ll want them to recognize that the corporation, not you, made the mistake.

FedEx Delivered To The Wrong Address With No Signature

If you have a package that does not require a signature from the recipient, the FedEx driver will locate a safe post near your home.

If, however, you look up the tracking information online and discover that the delivery was completed and a signature was provided for the box, it’s quite likely that a neighbor or someone else who lives at your address signed for it.

Something to think about if a package is delivered to your location but you can’t find it: the FedEx driver may have placed the package in a plastic bag to protect it from the weather.

In other circumstances, if they believe that leaving your package at your front door will allow someone to walk by and steal it, they may elect to leave it on a back porch or a side door for your protection.

What Do I Do If I Received A FedEx Package That Is Not Mine?

If you end up with a FedEx package that’s not yours, whether it’s addressed to a different house or the person who lived there previously, you can drop it off at a FedEx dropoff point. Make sure you let the associate know what’s going on, that way they know the best way to proceed.

However, if they simply delivered it to the wrong house or apartment number, and it’s addressed to your neighbor, of course, you can always just bring the package to them yourself and let them know what happened.

Why Won’t FedEx Give Me a Refund?

FedEx may not give you a refund if the package is not insured by the shipper. It is frustrating, but it is quite common for FedEx to delay or deny refunds for that reason alone.

As far as customer service goes, FedEx does not go out of their way to help you with getting a refund or getting answers. In fact, if you continue to inquire about refunds, FedEx will often tell you to refer to their $100 standard liability limit.

Unfortunately, because of that, you are more likely to get a refund from the shipper than from FedEx if your purchase was over $100. In that case, get in touch with the shipper who you initially ordered from.

Getting a refund from the shipper can still take some time. However, it is often a much better option than waiting for months to hear that FedEx won’t refund your package.

How To Avoid Misdelivered Packages

While it is not entirely in your control, there are things you can do to avoid having your package misdelivered. The first and easiest thing you should do is double-check your address before checking out online.

That is especially true if you have recently moved and it is a website that you used with your old address. Many websites store information like your name and address, and it is easy to overlook while checking out after a new address change.

You can also look into adding “delivery instructions” for your package. Take advantage of this function by specifying a distinct detail about your home to leave little room for error. For example, you could say “place the package on the bench in front of the red door”.

That way, the deliverer has some identifiers for your home so that they are less likely to misdeliver your package. Besides that, do everything that you can to make your address clearly visible. Consider getting a bold and noticeable address marker.

Use a Virtual Address

Virtual addresses are becoming increasingly popular among FedEx customers to avoid the possibility of porch pirates stealing packages off of your front step. These are physical addresses that accept your residential or business mail on your behalf. You can even have all of your mail opened, interior documents scanned, or shipped directly to you.

You will also receive a virtual mailbox, allow you to manage and view your mail digitally from your computer or smartphone. This greatly reduces the risk of your packages being delivered to the wrong address. Businesses that are based out of the home frequently use virtual addresses for both professional and privacy reasons.

Wrapping It Up

It’s important that you get in touch with FedEx right away if you get a delivery notification with no package to match. Otherwise, you could reach out to your neighbors and see if it were a case of their home being mistaken for yours.

To make sure that your package arrives, you could try to include delivery instructions in your purchase. Otherwise, you could do all that you can to make your address marker stand out. Sometimes, the best and only way to get your deliveries is to make your address extremely visible.

Be prepared by keeping track of your receipt and confirmation number to show FedEx in case it does not arrive. Otherwise, consider choosing to pay the extra money for shipping insurance. It is worth it, especially if your purchase is $100-$300 or more.
