Standard Chair Dimensions (All Types & With Drawings)

Chair Dimensions

Most pieces of furniture are manufactured to standardized measurements and knowing specific dimensions can make arranging the furniture in your home a much easier process. For example, once you know the dimensions of the various living room, dining room, or office chairs, you can begin designing the layout of your space and have a better idea how everything will fit.

It’s fair to say that chair dimensions can vary considerably from design to design, especially when you consider the wide array of style options available. For instance, the height of the seat on a standard kitchen chair will vary drastically from the seat height on a bar stool. The typical chair seat is between 16 and 20 inches tall and at least 18 inches deep. If the chair has a back, it is usually at least 14 inches high.

With that said, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on chair dimensions that features a wide variety of styles to help provide an accurate picture of how a particular chair will fit in your space. The dimensions listed below are meant to serve only as a general guide. As always, before you purchase any chairs, make sure that you take proper measurements to ensure that they will fit in your room.

Living Room Chair Dimensions

Although armchairs and sofas may look different because of their color, style, or fabric, you might be surprised to learn that most share similar standard measurements. When you have a general idea of how big a chair is, you can accurately plan how many pieces you can fit a room and the best way to position them to achieve an efficient flow. Here are some standard dimensions for various living room chairs:

  • Three-seat sofa: 35 inches deep by 84 inches wide
  • Loveseat: 35 inches deep by 60 inches wide
  • Armchair: 35 inches deep by 35 inches wide
