There is a wide variety of chairs in all shapes and sizes, so it is difficult for many homeowners to zero in on the standard chair size. Chairs are almost always 18” deep, but chair seats vary in height between 16” and 20”. Whether it be the height, depth, or chair back size, let’s take a look at the standard chair dimensions.

Most pieces of furniture are manufactured to standardized measurements and knowing specific dimensions can make arranging the furniture in your home a much easier process. For example, once you know the dimensions of the various living room, dining room, or office chairs, you can begin designing the layout of your space and have a better idea how everything will fit.

It’s fair to say that chair dimensions can vary considerably from design to design, especially when you consider the wide array of style options available. For instance, the height of the seat on a standard kitchen chair will vary drastically from the seat height on a bar stool. The typical chair seat is between 16 and 20 inches tall and at least 18 inches deep. If the chair has a back, it is usually at least 14 inches high.

With that said, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on chair dimensions that features a wide variety of styles to help provide an accurate picture of how a particular chair will fit in your space. The dimensions listed below are meant to serve only as a general guide. As always, before you purchase any chairs, make sure that you take proper measurements to ensure that they will fit in your room.
