Planning a landscaping project or just want to liven up your house with a few potted plants? Home Depot offers a wide variety of flowers, trees, shrubs, and plants to help you find what you’re looking for. But what happens if you change your mind after your purchase? Can you return plants to Home Depot?

You can return most plants to Home Depot with a receipt within 90 days under their general return policy. But you have one year to return perennials, landscaping plants, trees, and shrubs, even if they’re dead, under Home Depot’s Plant Return Policy. Certain smaller house plants require a 30-day return, and the store can reject returns that fall outside designated time frames.

If you’re unsure where your specific plant falls within the different return guidelines, make sure to verify at the time of purchase. It’s also advisable to always keep your receipt to ensure the smoothest return possible.

Does Home Depot Accept Plant Returns?

Fortunately, if that recent rose bush doesn’t bloom or the palm tree wasn’t exactly what you were hoping for, all is not lost. Home Depot is pretty forgiving when it comes to plant returns (good news for those lacking a green thumb).

However, they do have various policies for different plant types. For many of their plants, you’ll be able to return the item under the general return policy.

In a nutshell, the policy allows returns for up to 90 days with your receipt. If you purchase items with the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, you have 365 days to return any items that don’t fall under the Return Policy Exceptions.

For some smaller house plants, you only have 30 days to return them for a refund. But perennials, shrubs, trees, and landscaping plants have a much longer return window of one year.

If you’re unsure how the store classifies your plant, check at the time of purchase. If you attempt to return an item outside of the designated number of days, Home Depot might reject the return. Although, if you have your receipt, you have a better chance of receiving store credit or exchanging your plant for a new one.

Can You Return Plants To Home Depot Without A Receipt?

If you toss or lose your receipt, Home Depot can generate a new one for you in most cases. The store can locate receipts within 30 days of purchase if you paid with a credit or debit card or with a check. If you paid with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card or Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge or Commercial Account, they can find most receipts within the last 365 days.

The store will typically offer an exchange or store credit if you cannot obtain a copy of your receipt. You’ll need a valid photo ID for any non-receipt return.

The store will use its refund verification system to track your return history. This system also lets them see if you’ve tried to return multiple items in the past without a receipt. If you’ve done it too often, they might deny your return.

A Closer Look At Home Depot’s Plant Return Policy And Guarantee

You cannot return cut flowers and floral arrangements to Home Depot. But if you purchase perennials, shrubs, landscaping plants, or trees, you’ll certainly want to familiarize yourself with Home Depot’s Plant Return Policy.

You can return these items for up to one year, dead or alive, thanks to their one-year guarantee. Additionally, if you order plants, holiday trees, houseplants, etc., online, you can receive a replacement at no charge if your landscaping arrives dead or damaged.

However, you must notify customer support within three days of delivery. You also will need to provide a photo of the damaged plant.

Returning Bonnie Plants And Miracle-Gro Products: The Exclusive Grow A Garden Guarantee

Home Depot offers an exclusive guarantee on specific products, namely Bonnie Plants and Miracle-Gro plant foods and soil. The store provides a refund on these products if your Bonnie Plants don’t produce a harvest during the growing season (March to October).

To qualify, the plant must be an eligible Bonnie Harvest Guarantee product. You need to bring in the plant along with your receipt.

The receipt needs to show you also purchased Miracle-Gro soil or plant food. Or, you can show a separate Home Depot receipt for your Miracle-Gro Products if it was within three days of your Bonnie plant purchase.

The purchase can’t be more than 12 months prior, and if it was over 180 days, you’ll get a store credit. The exception is if you made the purchase with your Home Depot Consumer Credit Card. Using your store credit card gives you eligibility for a refund for up to one year.

Can You Return Plants To Lowe’s?

Lowe’s has a similar plant return policy to Home Depot. You can receive a refund for any shrubs, perennials, or trees purchased within one year with a receipt. All other plants fall under the store’s general 90-Day return policy.

They can offer an exchange or store credit if you don’t have your receipt, but you’ll need a valid photo ID. But if you paid with a check, credit, or debit card, they can reprint your receipt within 30 days.

Wrapping Up Returning Plants To Home Depot

Home Depot has a fairly generous return policy when it comes to plants. They offer a one-year guarantee on shrubs, perennials, trees, and landscaping plants. So you can return these items for up to one year with the receipt. Most other plants fall within the standard 90-day return policy, with a few exceptions.

Some small house plants only have a 30-day return window, and you can’t return floral arrangements or cut flowers. If you purchased plants with the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, you can return them within 365 days with the receipt. Also, if you receive dead or damaged plants from an online order, contact customer support within three days for a full refund.

If you don’t have your receipt, bring your photo ID; the store will likely issue an exchange or credit. But if you paid with a check, credit, or debit card within 30 days, the store can likely reprint your receipt. If you try and return plants outside their designated return windows, you won’t get a refund, but the store could offer an exchange or store credit.
