Owning a fridge that doesn’t work properly can be quite upsetting. But owning a refrigerator that should be called is plain scary. Your fridge can leak gas, catch on fire and even explode. That’s a recipe for disaster.

Most reliable refrigerator manufacturers recall their products as soon as they find a faulty part that can pose danger. However, Samsung hasn’t been proactive in this matter. Most recently (as of January 2022) more than 100,000 people joined a Facebook group, where they complained about a defective Samsung refrigerator.

A class-action lawsuit is currently pending against Samsung for more than 20 refrigerator models. The lawsuit details defects that affect the built-in-door ice makers, resulting in leaking and slush and over-freezing in the ice compartment. Also, water leakage from the ice house to below the refrigerator crisper trays, fan noise from an over-iced compartment, and freezing up.

It is reported that many freezers stopped cooling completely. After hiring repairmen, they were unable to fix the issue. Sometimes it was fixed temporarily and then the problem returns, and the fridge is still not working.

How Does a Recall Work?

When enough users complain about the same issue, the respective company usually takes action. The goal of a product recall is to determine which products or appliances are defective by gathering consumer data and providing them with a replacement or compensation.

Current Samsung Refrigerator Recalls

Currently, there are no official recalls from Samsung. However, they were class-action lawsuits filed in 2010 and again in 2017. Samsung is being forced to pay attention, as the mighty Facebook group of more than 100,000 Samsung fridge owners is taking action.

We were able to find this group on Facebook (it is very active and people post here daily):

How to Get a Refund or Free Repair For Your Samsung Refrigerator

An admin in the group shared his process on how anyone who owns a Samsung fridge can file a complaint with the vendor and bypass any expired warranty claims.

Tom explains you should demand a refund, and if you don’t get one, file a complaint with the FTC. He even created a video on Youtube to explain how to go about it.

Also, see his detailed process below:

Proof of a Refund for Model #RF28HMEDBSR

A homeowner who purchased his Samsung fridge, model #RF28HMEDBSR, just got an email recently and it looks like he’s going to get a refund check soon. Thanks to purchasing the Lowe’s Extended Protection plan, he’ll get the full purchase price back.

This was by far the worst Samsung fridge model, with lots of issues reported in the group. We found 25 different threads for #RF28HMEDBSR and lots of comments below them with other users complaining about several issues.

Take a look at this proof of refund from Lowe’s:

What If I Don’t Have The Warranty or Extended Protection Plan?

Just because you don’t have the warranty (or it has expired) or you didn’t purchase a protection plan, you don’t have to sit idle. Many people who purchase Samsung fridges are told it is past warranty, and they give up. Don’t give up so easily.

Join the Facebook group or follow the steps above, and prove to Lowe’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, or wherever you bought the fridge that it has been faulty, to begin with.

Don’t Have the Receipt?

I am not sure about other stores, but with Lowe’s you can contact their warranty division. They can send you a PDF with your proof of purchase or receipt. This will help you at least get a service call, while you fight the bigger battle of getting an actual refund or replacement.

File Your Complaint with Samsung First

The Facebook group is a great place to go to, being the consumer watchdog, they provide a great service. But, you should try resolving the issue with Samsung first.

One user reported they emailed officeofthepresident@sea.samsung.com and got a reply from a person at Samsung with the email deyanira.d@partner.sea.samsung.com, so that could be a quick and direct way to get a reply.
