Having a baby means you need a lot of diapers. And the odds are high that you’ve stockpiled a bunch of sizes and also gotten tons from friends and family. But babies grow quickly, so what happens when your newborn speeds through diaper sizes faster than you can count?

Can you return them to the store to get your money back? Specifically, can you return diapers to Target?

Target’s return policy allows the return of unopened diapers within 90 days of purchase with a receipt. If you paid with your RedCard, you get an extra 30 days.

And you can return diapers received through your Target baby registry or Target-owned brands for up to one year. If no receipt, Target can look up most purchases, or you might be eligible for store credit.

If you have unopened diapers that you don’t need, it makes sense to get your money back. Diapers aren’t cheap. But make sure to understand the return policy before you tote all those bulky diaper packs to Target.

Returning Diapers To Target With A Receipt

Returning various items like baby wipes and diapers to Target with a receipt is pretty simple. Target’s Return Policy includes diapers and says you can return unopened items within 90 days of purchase. You can show proof of purchase with a receipt or the barcode in your Target app.

If you paid for the diapers with a Target RedCard™, you have an extra 30 days to return them (unopened), so 120 days. You also get a year to return Target-owned brands, like up&up.

If the diapers are opened, you won’t be able to return them due to health and safety standards. However, if you’re returning the item because you noticed a defect or similar problem upon opening them, that’s different. You should be able to return the package if all diapers are there, but you might need to explain the problem to a manager.

When returning diapers in-store at Target, head to the Guest Services desk with your receipt or return barcode. If you paid with a credit or debit card, you’ll also need your method of payment. If you no longer have that particular card, you will likely receive a store credit.

Can I Return Diapers I Bought On Target.com?

You can also return diapers that you purchase at Target.com. You can opt to send them back via mail through Target’s return process or bring them to a nearby Target. If bringing into a store, you simply follow the same procedure mentioned above.

On the Target app or Target.com, select “Orders” and find the order with the diapers. Choose “Return” to start the process, following the onscreen prompts. You’ll also get a return barcode.

Typically, you’ll receive a refund in the form of your original payment. Therefore, if you paid with a credit card, it goes back to your card. If you use a Target gift card, you’ll get a Target gift card, etc.

You’ll receive instructions and a return label if you plan to return the diapers via mail. You can bring the item and label to a UPS dropoff location for shipping.

If you decide to return the item in-store, bring the return barcode with you to the Guest Services desk. You won’t pay shipping to return an item, but you may or may not get your original shipping charges refunded. If the reason for your return is an error on Target’s end or a damaged item, they’ll refund your shipping.

Will I Get Cash Back For Diapers I Return To Target?

Typically, when returning diapers to Target, you’ll get a refund in the same form as the original payment. But you do get some choices in some cases.

  • If you paid cash, you can get cash back, apply it as a credit to your Target RedCardâ„¢, or get a Target gift card.
  • Paying with a check gets you cash back if it’s been 10 days or a merchandise return card if the check hasn’t cleared yet.
  • If you pay with debit or credit cards, you get the money back on your card. You might also be able to request a Target gift card.
  • Paying with your RedCardâ„¢ gives you the option of a credit back to your card or a gift card.

Check out all the various payment refund options on Target’s return page to find the one that applies to you.

Returning Diapers To Target Without A Receipt

Let’s face it, most of the time, receipts end up in the trash, lost, or we don’t get one to begin with because the item’s a gift. You can most likely still return diapers to Target without a receipt if it’s within the appropriate time window. If you have the Target app, your purchases will show up in your history.

Also, if you paid with your RedCard™ or a third-party credit card, Target can look up the purchase. Make sure to bring your payment method with you. If you purchased the diapers online, your order history will provide proof. You can also refer to your delivery or shipping confirmation emails.

How Do I Return Diapers I Received Through A Target Registry?

You have up to one year to return unopened diapers purchased via your Target registry. Simply go to your registry, and select “Start a Return” in the “offers and Benefits” section. Select the appropriate store, and you’ll get a barcode.

You’ll receive your refund as a Target gift card when you use a gift receipt. If the item isn’t marked as purchased on your registry, you’ll get a merchandise return card. You can only use merchandise return cards in-store and may be asked to show your photo ID.

What Do You Do With Diapers You Don’t Need?

Have a bunch of diapers that you can’t return? Maybe it’s past the return window or you opened the package. No matter the reason, here are some things to do with those extra diapers.

  • Give them to a friend who’s expecting
  • Donate them to a homeless shelter or women’s refuge
  • Post them on online selling sites, like Facebook Marketplace
  • Use opened diapers to make wreaths and diaper bouquets for baby showers
  • Hang on to them if you’re planning to have more kids
  • See if a local daycare or preschool can use them

Bringing Diapers Back To Target

Target strives to make the return policy simple and straightforward. If it’s been 90 days or less and you have your receipt, you can return unopened diapers easily. Even if you don’t have your receipt, Target can look up most purchases when you use a credit card or your RedCard™ as payment.

You can also look up purchases in your Target app and Target Wallet. Returning items with a receipt gets you a full refund, but no receipt will likely get you a gift card. As a perk for RedCard™ holders, if you use your RedCard™ to pay, you get 120 days to return unopened diapers. You also have a year to return Target-owned brands and registry items.

The same return policy applies to diapers you buy at Target.com, but you can return them via mail or in-store. A few clicks via the website or app will initiate the return process for you.
