by Dennis Howard

RV camping is growing by leaps and bounds. Industry analysts estimate that there are now more than nine million RV’s and travel trailers in the US. Almost all these RVs have air conditioners in the 15000 BTU range. Many new RV owners wonder what the best generator is to power a 15000 BTU air conditioner.

A generator to power your RV with a 15000 BTU air conditioner normally needs to be in the 3500 to 4500-watt range. Most 15000 BTU RV air conditioners require about 3500 watts at startup and, once running, require 1500 watts continuously. Your generator must supply these amounts of energy plus any other appliances or equipment that you want to operate.

One of the great attractions for many RV families is the chance to be away from people. Boondocking is a fast-growing segment of the RV user population. A good inverter generator offers RV’ers the chance to be out in nature but retain the conveniences built into their RVs. However, finding the right combination of features, power, and price can be challenging.

Taking the Grid with You

Getting off the grid is one of the biggest attractions of RV’ing and boondocking. However, many of us appreciate the comforts that we bought with our RV. We want to enjoy nature but still have the conveniences such as air conditioning, a cold refrigerator, and hot water. If you are five miles up a dirt road and not a power pole in sight, a good inverter generator is an answer.

Let’s Take a look at our picks for the best inverter generator to power your RV and its 15000 BTU air conditioner.

1. Champion Power Equipment 200987 4500-Watt Wireless Remote Start Inverter Generator

One of the big considerations when choosing an inverter generator to pair with your RV is the capacity. A typical RV air conditioner rated at 150000 BTU normally needs about 3500 watts to start without possibly damaging the air conditioner or the generator. The Champion 200987 inverter generator supplies 4500 starting watts and can maintain 3500 watts or running capacity.

Reliability and Suitability

Reliability is a big concern for many RV owners who shop for an inverter generator for their rigs. Reliability is an honest concern. There is nothing worse than hauling an inverter generator several hundred miles to your favorite campsite and have it fail.

Champion Power Equipment has a reputation for trouble-free power equipment. Overall, RV’ers who buy and use Champion inverter generators give this equipment high marks. The comments we found most about these inverter generators rain in the categories of:

  • One of the quietest inverter generators of this size I have found
  • Start without fail every time. Even pull starting is easy
  • The remote start is a great idea. No more getting out of the warm RV to start the generator
  • The Champion customer service is first-rate.

Some Champion 4500-watt inverter generator owners did mention the need to follow the instructions about the break-in period and doing routine maintenance.

Weight and Portability

Weight is always an issue with an RV, especially travel trailers. Add too much weight and you can quickly exceed the towing capacity of your pulling vehicle. The Champion 4500-watt inverter generator is no lightweight in the generator field. Fully fueled, the Champion 4500-watt inverter generator will top out at just over 100 pounds.

The Champion 4500-watt inverter generator does come equipped with wheels and a handle, but if you must lift the generator into the back of a truck, you best have a friend along. The wheelset makes the Champion inverter generator easy to maneuver around a campsite. Lifting this unit above waist height is almost impossible for one person.

Enjoying the Solitude – dBA’s and Gasoline Engines

The other downside of running a generator at your campsite to keep the AC blowing is the noise. Any gasoline-powered equipment will produce levels of noise that can be irritating and distracting.

The Champion 4500-watt inverter generator is a champion (pardon the pun) in the noise department. These fully encased 4500-watt inverter generators produce only 61 dBA. Considering that a vacuum cleaner produces around 75 dBA, operating the Champion 4500 on the backside of your RV is not noticeable to most people inside.

What We Think

Overall, our impression of the Champion 4500 Watt remote electric start inverter generator is excellent. We think that the Champion inverter generator deserves a hard look if you are shopping for an inverter generator for your RV needs.

  • The Champion inverter generator is robust and powerful. It provides enough electrical overhead to run most RV air conditioners and keep the refrigerator cold and the water hot.
  • Reliability isn’t an issue here, provided you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on the break-in period and performing routine scheduled maintenance
  • You shouldn’t have issues with your camping neighbors when you run the Champion 4500 watt inverter generator. The enclosure and sound deadening deliver a quiet 61 dBA level.
  • Let’s not forget that wireless remote start capability. For the price of this generator, you would be hard-pressed to find another comparable generator with a regular electric start, much less wireless.
  • Weight may be the only real drawback to this inverter generator. It is on the heavy side.

All in all, the Champion 200987 4500-watt RV ready Inverter Generator offers some amazing features at a very reasonable price.

2. Generac IQ3500 Portable Inverter Generator

Generac is probably one of the most well-known makers of portable and stationary generator sets in the US. You can find Generac equipment protecting hospitals, water treatment and pumping facilities, and fire stations. It makes sense that RV owners trust the reputation delivered by Generac equipment.

The IQ series of Generac portable inverter generators are made expressly for powering events on the go. These inverter generators are perfect for your RV and include all the features you want in a portable inverter generator.

  • RV ready configuration includes a 30 Amp twist lock plug that delivers the full power of the inverter generator.
  • Simple and easy one dial controls for starting, running, and shutting down
  • The LCD gives you all the data you need including run time, generator status, and fuel level.
  • The Generac IQ3500 is parallel-ready. Using the accessory cable sold separately, you can connect two IQ3500 watt generators for double the power

These features are only a small number of the thoughtful design elements of the Generac IQ3500 inverter generator. For ease of use and dependable operation, Generac is a proven player.

Weight and Portability

The Generac IQ 500 is a solid piece of kit. These inverter generators from Generac are not lightweights. Fully fueled and with oil, the Generac IQ3500 sits at almost 110 lbs. One hundred ten pounds is not a bulky weight, but you may need a helper to get this generator into the back of your truck.

If you want wheels, you must purchase a separate accessory pack. Several companies offer aftermarket wheel kits for the Generac 3500, including an all-terrain set of oversized pneumatic tires for those who are truly adventurous.

Enjoying the Solitude – dBA’s and Gasoline Engines

Generac is spot-on with its sound management designs. The Generac IQ3500 creates a noise level of about 57 dBA at 10 feet. This dBA rating level is quieter than most people keep their TV when they are watching. Operating normally at the end of most RV electrical tethers, the Generac IQ3500 won’t be noticeable inside the RV.

You should, of course, observe any park or area rules concerning the use of any generator. You certainly don’t want to disturb someone else’s quest for peace in the outdoors.

What We Think

Generac is a name that anyone can trust. The Generac IQ3500 is a solid, dependable, and quiet option for powering the air conditioner in your RV. When we consider a portable inverter generator for an RV, Generac is always at the top of the list.

  • We like the Generac name on this inverter generator. The reputation of Generac goes a long way for us.
  • The Generac IQ3500 is one of the quietest inverter generators on the market. Some people claim it is quieter than the comparable Honda inverter generators
  • I often operate my HAM radio gear while camping. The Generac IQ3500 doesn’t produce any interference or noise in the electrical system
  • If you need more power, the ability to link two of these generators together is a great benefit.

Overall, the Generac IQ3500 is a winner. Despite the need to spend extra to get the wheels and the link cable, the quality and dependability of the Generac inverter generator make this a contender for your RV electrical needs.

3. Predator 3500 Super Quiet Inverter Generator

The Predator line of generators is offered almost exclusively by Harbor Freight. When Harbor Freight introduced the line in their stores, I was a little dubious. Harbor Freight is not known for having premium quality in their larger power tools. However, I took a second look when I needed an inverter generator for my RV.

I was familiar with the Predator power plants. I have replaced several small engines on other equipment with small Predator engines from Harbor Freight. They seem to be well built and have provided excellent service at a very reasonable price for me. The features list on the Predator inverter generators caught my attention.

  • 212cc air-cooled OHV gasoline engine with electric start
  • Digital LCS screen integrated into the control panel with low oil, overload, and output indicators
  • Four integral rolling lockable castors for easy transportation
  • RV ready plug configurations
  • 57 dBA rating

Many of these features are only available on inverter generators costing considerably more. If you are on a budget but need a rugged inverter generator to keep your RV operating, the Predator 3500 may be the solution to your problem.

Weight and Portability

The Predator 3500 inverter generator weighs about one hundred pounds with fully fueled and ready to run. One hundred pounds is right in the middle of the weight class for this size inverter generator. You will probably need a friend to help load this inverter generator into the bed of your truck.

However, once on the ground, the integral four swivel casters make moving and positioning this inverter generator a breeze. The wheels don’t work well for rough or rocky terrain but suffice when the ground is relatively smooth.

Enjoying the Solitude – dBA’s and Gasoline Engines

The construction of the housing of the Predator 3500 inverter generator makes it one of the quieter entries on our list. The soundproofing does its job. One big challenge when trying to control sound with an air-cooled gasoline engine is generating enough airflow. Any opening that admits air has the possibility of releasing sound.

Predator has done an excellent job of partitioning and controlling the exhaust sound to keep noise at a minimum. A 57 dBA sound level is certainly impressive. You won’t notice the Predator 3500 running.

What We Think

The Predator line of gasoline-powered equipment from Harbor freight continues to impress me. The engineering seems sound, and the quality control has, for me, been without a flaw. I will say that from experience, it is vital that you follow the break-in routines and keep the maintenance schedule regularly.

  • These are imports from China, but the quality of the build and materials seems to be high.
  • These inverter generators are quiet
  • The fit and finish are good. The power plants performed well for me.
  • Follow the recommendations on start-up, break-in, and maintenance.

My one recommendation on the Predator equipment is to purchase the extended warranty. If you don’t ever need it, it is cheap insurance. If you do have problems, Harbor Freight will make good without any questions.

4. Westinghouse Igen 4500 Portable Inverter Generator

Westinghouse has been a household name for electric appliances for many years. It stands to reason that Westinghouse should have a presence in the portable inverter generator market. Their years of experience with electrical generation and innovation make it seem natural.

The Westinghouse Igen 4500 inverter generator is purpose-designed for tailgating and RV’ing. These inverter generators include LED monitoring, remote start and an 18-hour runtime. The feature list goes on to include:

  • Four thousand five hundred starting watts and 3700 running watts. More than enough power for most RV’s to operate their air conditioner and other appliances safely.
  • Enhanced fuel efficiency for runtimes of up to 18 hours on 3.5 gallons of fuel
  • A telescoping handle and included wheels make portability part of the Westinghouse package
  • Easy electric start is even better with a remote start key fob
  • The highly efficient double insulated enclosure keeps the Westinghouse Igen 4500 operating at a quiet 52 dBA
  • RV ready with a 30 Amp TT-30R outlet

The features list could go on. These are just a few of the features that we felt were notable and should be included in this article.

Weight and Portability

Filled with fuel and oil, the Westinghouse Igen 4500 weighs in at just over 100 lbs. At 100 lbs., this is by no means a lightweight inverter generator. However, on a watt per pound comparison, it is one of the lightest.

The included wheels and extendable handle also help mitigate the weight issue. You may have to find a friend to help move this inverter generator up and into a pickup bed. However, once on the ground, the handle and wheels make this machine easy and quick to position.

Enjoying the Solitude – dBA’s and Gasoline Engines

A gasoline-powered engine will make noise. There is no denying or getting around that fact. The trick is to reduce the noise to a level that we can easily overlook or accept. Westinghouse has gone to great lengths to reduce the noise associated with its Igen 4500 inverter generator.

A fully enclosed generator and engine compartment with state-of-the-art insulation do most of the job. Specially designed asymmetrical cooling fans and a low tone muffler keep noise to hardly noticeable levels. At 52 dBA, the Westinghouse Igen 4500 probably creates less noise than a normal conversation.

What We Think

I wish I had considered a Westinghouse Igen 4500 when I bought my last inverter generator. For only a few hundred dollars more, I could have had more power and less noise. The 4500-watt startup and 3700-watt running capabilities make this an attractive choice alone.

  • Exceptionally quiet operation is a big plus with the Westinghouse Igen 4500 inverter generator
  • Having a wheelset and a telescoping handle as part of the package gives extra value.
  • A remote start included with the package adds nothing but convenience to the whole setup
  • Larger starting capacity and running capacity gets you more for the money than most other inverter generators

For our money, the Westinghouse Igen 4500 is possibly the best value for the money of any of the inverter generators we have ranked. You won’t need to spend money on aftermarket parts to have the functionality and get the Westinghouse name’s backing.

5. Pulsar Products PG4500iSR Portable Inverter Generator

Often when someone mentions Pulsar, we think of TVs, watches, or even cameras. What many don’t realize is that Pulsar has a large presence in the retail electrical generator market. All the expertise and knowledge from Pulsar’s dedication to innovation shows up in these electrical generation products.

In particular, the Pulsar PG4500iSR portable inverter generator is a great choice for RV’ers. For larger RV’s or those who demand more from their inverter generator, the Pulsar PG4500iSR may fit the bill precisely. A few of the features of this inverter generator deserve mention.

  • 4500 starting and 3700 running watts
  • Up to 11 hours runtime on 3.2 gallons of fuel at half load
  • Wireless remote start operates up to 80 feet away
  • Includes a telescopic handle and 5-inch never-flat tires
  • Parallel operation ready. Use the accessory cable to link two generators together to double the power
  • RV ready with a 30 AMP twist-lock outlet
  • CARB and EPA certified

More technical features make this Pulsar inverter generator even more attractive to those who work with electronic equipment on the road and need a stable, clean electrical signal.

Weight and Portability

The Pulsar PG4500 inverter generator is no lightweight. At 108 lbs. without fuel or oil, the Pulsar is probably the heaviest of the inverter generators on our list. If you don’t have to muscle the Pulsar PG4500 in and out of a confined space or pickup bed, the portability is exceptional. The telescopic handle and the never-flat tires make getting the machine around easy.

The extra attention to the strength of the housing is probably the main reason for this extra weight. The Pulsar PG4500 is housed in a heavy-duty enclosure that can withstand some severe abuse and use.

Enjoying the Solitude – dBA’s and Gasoline Engines

Unfortunately, Pulsar didn’t put as much effort into sound suppression as building durable housing. The 57 dBA rating Pulsar puts on the PG4500 inverter generator is the loudest on our list.

While 65 dBA is all that noisy, it is enough to be noticeable. If you are near your camping neighbors, the Pulsar may become a problem. If noise is not a problem, the Pulsar PG4500 offers some nice features at a reasonable cost.

What We Think

There is no doubt that the Pulsar PG4500 is worth a place on our list of the best inverter generators. It does have some downsides, but almost every other inverter generator on our list does as well. Picking your negatives is part of the choosing game. However, Pulsar does have some laudable attributes

  • Large capacity inverter generator delivering 4500 starting and 3700 running watts
  • RV ready with a 30 AMP twist-lock outlet
  • Wireless remote operation
  • Long runtimes mean fewer refueling stops for extended use

The one downside we see is the noise level. In consideration, 65 dBA is about what a normal conversation in a room would be. A Pulsar PG4500 set 20 feet away from a good RV will be hardly noticeable inside.

Staying Cool without Getting Hot Under the Collar

Staying cool in your RV without getting hot and bothered by problems with your inverter generator is a good goal. Choosing an inverter generator that fits your needs and expectations is the challenge. We hope that the information in this article helps you make the right decision as you pick your inverter generator.
