What is Teak Wood?

Teak is a close-grained hardwood that comes from a tree that is native to the tropics – Tectona grandis. It has been a prized material since about the 7th century when it was originally used to decorate the residences of the wealthy. Eventually, the wood may its way to Indonesia, where it was used for shipbuilding because of its ability to ward off dry rot.

Nowadays, teak is commonly found in many Southeast Asian nations such as Malaysia, Burma, and Thailand, but it’s most prominent in Indonesia. It is highly valued for both its durability and its elegance. In fact, it is one of the hardest and strongest of all timbers. The natural oils and rubber present in the tight grain of the wood makes it highly resistant to rotting and the effects from rain, snow, frost, and the hot sun.

These oils also protect the wood from fungi and parasites, that typically destroy all other types of wood. Regardless of the environment, teak wood requires little to no maintenance. All of these characteristics combined make teak the ideal wood choice for all outdoor applications, and it is even a premium lumber of choice for extravagant estates, elegant yachts, hotels, and corporate headquarters.

The wood has a natural brown color that weathers to a silvery gray over time. Aside from its natural beauty, teak is one of the most valuable woods out there.

Why Teak Wood for Shower Benches?

Here are just a few of the benefits you can expect when you from a shower bench made out of teak wood:

  • It is incredibly durable, lasting for generations in virtually any climate and with zero maintenance.
  • The high oil and rubber content of teak wood makes it impervious to potential damage caused by prolonged exposure to moisture.
  • Since it is dense, teak wood resists warping, twisting, cracking, chipping, and splintering over time – even when exposed to water.
  • Teak wood is also naturally resistant to mold and mildew.
  • No additional treatments or finishes are required to extend the longevity of teak wood. Though, enhancement products can be used to bring back the lovely golden color.
  • The wood’s high silica content provides a natural, non-slip surface that is ideal for use in the shower.
  • Teak wood is self-regulating, meaning it will stay warm in the summer and cool in the summer. When used in the shower, it will always be the ideal temperature.
  • It feels good to the touch and adds a nice bit of warmth and comfort to your shower enclosure.

While traditional plastic or metal shower benches can rust, break down or become brittle over time, teak wood shower benches offer many years of luxury, convenience, and elegance.

Can Teak Wood Get Wet?

Commonly used in the construction of boats and outdoor furniture, teak wood is the ideal choice for any application that is going to be repeatedly exposed to water and moisture. With conventional wooden furniture, oils and treatments must be applied in order to protect it from water damage.

However, this is not the case with teak. The natural oils and rubber present in the wood helps it repel water. Additionally, most teak shower benches are constructed with spaces in between the slats, which allows water to run off easily.

How Well Do Teak Shower Benches Hold Up?

Although teak holds up exceptionally well to water, resists mold, mildew, and repels pests, it still ages like any other type of wood. It begins as a warm, honey color and transitions to a dull gray hue over time. While many individuals enjoy the weathered, aged appearance that it takes on, others prefer the deep, rich colors of teak wood when it’s fresh.

Fortunately, there are ways to maintain your teak wood bench to keep it looking good as new for as long as desired (more on this below). However, it’s important to note that teak wood stains easily. Any bath products that are colored – like soaps, shampoos, gels, etc. – will likely stain your teak shower bench.

Teak Shower Bench Features to Consider

Teak shower benches come in a variety of designs, styles, and shapes. You’ll find benches as wide as three feet for large shower enclosures and compact corner benches can be used for showers that are limited on space. Some even feature curved seating for added comfort. When it comes to choosing the right teak shower bench, here are some features you may want to consider to amplify convenience, functionality, and comfort:

  • Shape: Whether you’re looking for a long, rectangular bench to rest along the side of your shower, or a smaller, triangular one to fit in the corner of a more compact shower, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from that suit your situation.
  • Oversized: In some cases, depending on the user, an oversized bench with a higher weight capacity may be needed. Or, you may just have an exceptionally large shower and want a bigger bench that will match it better.
  • Storage Shelf: Many teak shower bench models come with a shelf beneath the seat of the bench, with raised sides or rails, that can be used for storing varying shower products.
  • Back: If you want to lean back and relax against your shower wall, it’s likely going to be a little cold. Instead, you can opt for a teak shower bench that has a back. This option will be warming to the touch and also provide more support while seated.
  • Adjustable Feet: As you’re likely already aware, most shower floors aren’t flat or even. If this applies to your shower, a bench is going to sit unevenly on the floor and rock back and forth while in use. Fortunately, a teak shower bench that has adjustable feet can level it out and remedy this problem.
  • Handles and/or Arms: Arms are an excellent feature to have for resting on, while also providing a surface to hold onto when standing up or sitting down. Whereas, handles can make it easier to lift and relocate the bench as needed.

Teak Shower Bench Maintenance

With its unmatched durability, and resistance to mold, mildew, and moisture, teak requires very little maintenance. However, a little regular maintenance can help to keep your teak shower bench looking great for many years to come.

Regular Cleaning

After you shower, give your teak shower bench a good rinse to ensure that any shampoo, soaps, or other bathing products are cleaned off. Every couple of months, or as needed, scrub the teak using water and a soft-bristled brush. This will help remove the buildup of residue from soaps or small amounts of mildew. You can also use a mixture of water and mild soap to clean more thoroughly. After scrubbing, rinse the bench and let it dry.

Quick tip: Performing quick, routine cleanings using just water and a soft brush will greatly reduce the likelihood of discoloration and stains.

Teak Oil

Although cleaning your teak shower bench is important, this process will slowly strip away the oils that are naturally present in the wood that maintain the natural, rich, honey-like color. Without these oils, the teak will start to oxidize to a dull, weathered, silvery-gray hue. While you may like this color, if you want to keep your teak shower bench looking new, you’ll want to apply teak oil to the wood every few months.

If your teak shower bench has already turned gray, it is not beyond hope. In fact, with some oil and a little bit of elbow grease, you can restore it back to its original form. Start by using 80-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of the bench, then work your way up to finer grits such as 120 or even 220. When you’ve finished sanding, remove the excess dust with pressurized air or a dry cloth. Finally, apply teak oil to the bench to seal your work.

Teak Wood Quality

While teak is an incredibly durable, highly sought-after type of wood, it’s important to understand that not all teak wood is created equal. There are different grades of teak – ranging from A to C. Sapwood, named for the outer layer, is one type of teak that doesn’t have the same robust characteristics that teak made from the center of the tree has. Heartwood, often referred to as Grade A teak, comes from the inner layers of the tree. The center of the tree is where the highest concentrations of natural oils are, which is the key to resistance of water and the outdoor elements.

As such, heartwood is much more valuable than sapwood, and also more expensive. Also, since there is typically more sapwood than heartwood in a tree, this contributes to the increase in price. Though, if you are looking into constructing your own shower bench, heartwood is the grade that you want to invest in to ensure the best results.

One of the major benefits of using teak wood is the fact that it is sustainable. Teak is a renewable, environmentally-friendly building material. It is typically grown on sustainable plantations that are managed by the government in countries like Belize and Indonesia. For every tree that is used, more than one is planted to replace it. This ensures that teak will always be available for future generations to enjoy.
