Using a sliding door is a great solution when you’re working in a limited space. They can also offer a more streamlined look, and people frequently use them as back doors and patio doors. Sliding doors are also a popular option for closets, and you can find sliding pocket doors in many older homes.

Non-glass sliding doors come with 24, 28, 30, 32, or 36 inches panel widths and usually include two panels. In a typical set of standard glass sliding doors with two panels, the width is 60 to 72 inches. Both doors have a standard height of 80 inches, although some glass panels can be 82 or 96 inches tall.

Sliding doors fit into a track that goes around the door frame that fits the doors’ length and thickness. These tracks usually feature either wheels or rollers to move the doors back and forth on the track.

Sliding Glass Door Sizes

Sliding glass doors are a popular choice for accessing a backyard patio area. They offer great views of the outside and don’t take up any room in your home when you need to open them. The standard set of sliding patio glass doors usually features two panels, both of which stand 80 inches tall.

Each glass panel is typically 30 or 36 inches wide. This makes the total width 5 feet (60 inches) wide or 6 feet (72 inches wide). However, you can also get 4-foot wide panels, so the total width measures 8 feet (96 inches) wide.

Likewise, you can also find glass doors in heights of 82 and 96 inches. Typically, standard doors are sized to fit typical doorframe openings. This standard sizing makes it easier to select doors that can fit into existing openings.

Also, one panel is usually fixed in a standard set of glass sliding doors while the other panel slides. However, you have quite a few options when designing your glass sliding door setup. You can also opt for custom sizes and variations, although these are typically easier to install during construction.

Sliding Glass Door Configurations

While two-panel sliding doors might be the standard, it’s not the only option. Many people, especially in larger, custom homes, feature wide openings leading onto back patios and verandas. To maximize the view, a large section of the wall is sometimes a series of glass sliding doors.

This opening can hold up to three of four panels. Sometimes, there might be one sizeable fixed piece of glass in the center, with two separate sliding doors on either side. You can also select configurations in which every panel can slide.

Therefore, when determining the best setup for your space, start with your opening and work from there. Beyond two-panel doors, three-panel glass sliding doors are also popular. Each panel in a series of three-panel doors often measures 3 or 4 feet wide.

Therefore, the total width of a three-panel set is usually 9 feet(108 inches) or 12 feet(144 inches). Here are a few possible configurations you could use for glass sliding doors.

Sliding Screen Door Sizes

In addition to sliding glass doors, many people use sliding screen doors. This way, you can open the glass door to let in the breeze and fresh air but not the bugs. When using sliding screen doors with sliding glass doors, each set of doors needs its own track.

Sliding screen doors are also 80 inches tall and typically come in widths measuring 36 or 48 inches. However, they also come in 30-inch widths. The essential point is to get screen doors the same size as your glass doors.

Another popular place to find sliding doors is a reach-in closet and other closets. They are an especially good solution when you’re working in a smaller bedroom. You won’t need to worry about door clearance when you open your closet doors.

One of the most common materials for non-glass sliding closet doors is wood or mirrored doors. Although, you can also find metal, and other various materials, especially in rustic and industrial spaces. Usually, non-glass sliding doors come with just two panels.

Each panel comes in a variety of widths, increasing in 2-inch and 4-inch increments. The most common widths for non-glass sliding doors are 24, 28, 30, 32, and 36 inches.

Usually, the total width for a set of sliding doors is 5 feet, 6 feet, or 8 feet. The most commonly found sliding closet doors are usually 6-feet wide.

However, you can add panels or commission custom-sized panels. But, each individual panel should measure no more than 5 feet wide. Like glass sliding doors, sliding closet doors in other materials are also typically 80 inches tall.

Sliding Barn Door Sizes

Another sliding door option is a barn door, which has grown in popularity over the past several years. These doors are often used to add separation between two spaces with only an opening between them.

You can also use them in front of a closet, home office, or a bathroom, especially where there’s limited space. Depending on the opening, you might use two barn door panels or only need one.

A barn door has a standard width of 3 feet, 4 feet, or 5 feet and is usually 80 to 84 inches tall. However, you can also find smaller sizes and in-between sizes, like 28-inch or 42-inch widths.

Unlike typical sliding doors, barn doors don’t fit into a track. Instead, they hang at least 6 inches from the ceiling, from a track installed above the door frame or opening.

Barn doors also must hang slightly above the floor; there is no bottom track. When hanging a barn door, it’s important to follow the specific measurement instructions for the hardware you are using.

Pocket doors are a type of sliding door that slides into the wall. They are great space savers and are often used in small homes to close off bathrooms. Many older homes also feature double pocket doors, closing off areas like dining rooms and sitting rooms.

Standard pocket doors are usually 24 to 32 inches wide and 80 inches tall. When installing a pocket door, you need to double the size of the door to determine the available wall space.

Therefore, if installing a new 24-inch pocket door, you need a wall area of 48 inches. If you are using double pocket doors, you would multiply your resulting number by two. In the example above, you would need a total area of 96 inches.

The rough opening for a pocket door is usually 84.5 inches tall. The width is typically two times the width of the door plus one inch.

Determining the Rough-In for Sliding Doors

If framing new sliding doors, you typically add 2 inches to the door’s width. So, if the total width of the sliding doors is 60 inches, you need a rough opening 62 inches wide.

You usually add 2 ⅝ inches to the height of the door. If replacing existing sliding doors, you can simply get doors the same size as your old ones.

Freestanding Closets with Sliding Doors

Besides installing sliding doors for a closet, bathroom, patio, or room partition, you can use them in other places. For example, many freestanding closets and wardrobes also feature sliding doors. These doors vary in size depending on the overall unit.

Using a wardrobe with sliding doors is an excellent solution to create storage in a small room without a closet. Plus, you get the same benefit as standard sliding doors; no need to worry about door clearance when you open them.
